Google is no longer developing Gemini as a chatbot that simply answers questions. Its latest updates reveal a much bigger plan: transforming Gemini into a personal AI assistant that can conduct research, create content, manage tasks, operate applications, and complete work on behalf of users.
From a faster Gemini model and automated task management to conversational video editing and personalized learning, Gemini has received several powerful improvements. However, Google’s most anticipated model has reportedly experienced a major delay.
Gemini 3.5 Flash Is Now the Main Gemini Model
One of the biggest recent changes is the introduction of Gemini 3.5 Flash. Google describes it as its strongest Flash model for coding, reasoning, and complex AI tasks.
Unlike a regular chatbot that waits for instructions one question at a time, Gemini 3.5 Flash is designed to handle longer assignments. It can plan tasks, deploy specialized AI agents, analyze large amounts of information, and complete several stages of a project under human supervision.
Google has made Gemini 3.5 Flash the default model in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search. It is also available to developers through the Gemini API, Google AI Studio, and Android Studio.
For everyday users, this means faster responses and better support for complicated requests. For developers and businesses, it creates more opportunities for advanced automation.
Gemini Spark Can Now Work in the Background
Gemini Spark is perhaps the clearest sign that Google wants Gemini to become a genuine digital assistant.
Spark is designed to perform tasks in the background, even when a user’s computer is closed or phone is locked. It can connect with Google Workspace tools such as Gmail, Docs, and Slides, allowing it to organize information, prepare documents, and complete scheduled assignments.
Recent updates have brought Spark to macOS in beta for eligible Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States. Google has also added connections to Canva, Dropbox, Google Keep, Google Tasks, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals.
Spark can track topics such as sports, finance, shopping, news, and weather, then provide an update when something important happens.
Google is also expanding Spark beyond English. In July, the company announced that the agent was beginning to become available in local Southeast Asian languages for eligible Gemini Advanced subscribers.
Availability still depends on the user’s country and subscription plan, so some people may not see these features immediately.
Students Can Create Personalized Study Notebooks
Gemini is also becoming more useful for education.
The new Study Notebooks feature allows learners to choose a subject and receive short, personalised lessons based on their existing knowledge and areas of weakness. Gemini can generate practice quizzes, monitor performance, and display progress through a customised dashboard.
Instead of studying without direction, users can identify the topics that require more attention and follow a learning plan created around their needs.
This feature could be especially useful for students preparing for examinations, professionals learning new skills, or anyone trying to understand a difficult topic without feeling overwhelmed.
Gemini Omni Introduces Conversational Video Creation

Content creators have also received a major upgrade through Gemini Omni Flash.
Omni can accept combinations of text, images, audio, and video, then use those materials to create a new video. Users can also edit the result through normal conversation.
For example, someone could ask Gemini to change an object, adjust a scene, or transform the entire visual style without learning how to use complicated editing software.
Google says the model is designed to maintain character consistency, remember previous scenes, and create believable movement while changes are being made. Videos created with Omni include Google’s SynthID watermark to help identify AI generated content.
Gemini Omni Flash is becoming available globally to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers through Gemini and Google Flow. It is also being introduced through YouTube Shorts and YouTube Create.
Gemini Can Interact With Computers
Gemini 3.5 Flash now includes built in computer use capabilities.
Developers can build agents that view and interact with browsers, mobile devices, and desktop environments. These agents could test software, organise files, enter information into applications, or perform repetitive office tasks.
Allowing AI to operate software can create security risks. To address this, Google has introduced safeguards that may require human approval before sensitive or irreversible actions are completed.
The system can also stop a task when it detects a possible indirect prompt injection attack.
This feature is currently aimed mainly at developers and enterprise users, but it provides a strong indication of where consumer AI assistants are heading.
Live Translation Now Supports More Than 70 Languages
Google has also released Gemini 3.5 Live Translate, a speech to speech translation model that automatically recognizes more than 70 languages.
It translates conversations continuously and attempts to preserve the speaker’s tone, pace, and pitch. Instead of waiting until someone finishes an entire statement, the model begins translating while the person is still speaking and remains only a few seconds behind.
The technology is being introduced through Google Translate, the Gemini Live API, and a private preview in Google Meet.
Gemini in Google Sheets Is Expanding
Gemini’s spreadsheet tools are becoming available in more languages.
Fill with Gemini can generate text, summarise information, classify entries, and analyse sentiment directly inside selected spreadsheet cells.
In July, Google expanded the feature to 11 additional languages, including Mandarin, Dutch, Malay, Polish, Turkish, Indonesian, Swedish, and Danish.
This update could save businesses, researchers, and students a considerable amount of time when preparing, cleaning, or interpreting large amounts of information.
Gemini 3.5 Pro Has Reportedly Been Delayed
The biggest Gemini news as of July 17 is not a new launch.
Google originally indicated that Gemini 3.5 Pro would arrive after the release of Gemini 3.5 Flash. However, reports suggest that the flagship model is several months behind schedule because Google is still working to improve its performance, especially in coding.
Google confirmed that it was testing Gemini 3.5 Pro and other models with selected partners, but it did not announce a new public release date.
Users should therefore be careful with posts claiming that Gemini 3.5 Pro is already fully available. For now, Gemini 3.5 Flash remains the model that has been released more widely.
What These Updates Mean
Gemini is gradually moving beyond writing, brainstorming, and answering questions. Google is building an AI system that can learn a user’s preferences, work across different applications, create multimedia content, and complete complex tasks.
For students, Gemini can serve as a personal tutor. For creators, it offers image and video tools. For businesses, it can automate research, spreadsheet tasks, and administrative work. For developers, it is becoming a platform for building AI agents that can take meaningful action.
